Church Our Lady of Midan Baghdad, Iraq 1629

One of the earliest foreign travelers to Baghdad during 1629 Fr. Pacifique a Capucin monk mentions the Church of Our Lady of Midan, a place of worship for the Christian community.

It was used for worship until 1852, when the Church of Holy Trinity was built in Shorja Baghdad. After 1852, the Church of Midan became a shrine and a place of pilgrimage, where Holy services were performed once a year on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

By 1965 the church and its surroundings were in extreme dilapidated state. It was Aram Garibian who rebuilds the church with rooms for the pilgrims and a house for the caretaker. The building of the new church was completed 1970. Before demolition of the old building a complete architectural and photographic survey of the church and its surroundings were made. The architect was Henry Svoboda who also designed the furniture.
